Anger and Aggression

Understanding and Managing Intense Emotions

Anger is a natural and immediate emotional response to a perceived threat, injustice, or violation of boundaries. While it’s a valid human emotion, anger can become destructive when it escalates into aggression or remains unresolved. At the Cyprus Institute for Emotion Focused Therapy (CiEFT), we support individuals who struggle with anger, helping them understand its roots and transform it into constructive emotional awareness.

Whether you feel overwhelmed by irritability, react with explosive outbursts, or struggle with passive-aggressive behaviors, you are not alone—and there is support available.

What is Anger?

Anger often masks more vulnerable emotions like fear, shame, guilt, or sadness. In Emotion-Focused Therapy, we refer to this as secondary anger—an emotion triggered by deeper pain or unmet needs. Without support, anger can take over your reactions, harm your relationships, and affect your work and overall wellbeing.

While expressing frustration occasionally is normal, persistent or aggressive anger may indicate a deeper issue and may require professional help, especially if it leads to conflict, isolation, or legal consequences.

Recognizing the Symptoms of Anger

We may respond to anger in psychological, physical, or behavioral ways:

Psychological Symptoms

  • Feelings of frustration or being wronged
  • Anxiety, stress, or feeling overwhelmed
  • Guilt after outbursts
  • Hostility or internal tension
  • Difficulty controlling emotions

Physical Symptoms

  • Increased heart rate or blood pressure
  • Muscle tension, clenched jaw
  • Tingling, sweating, or shaking
  • Headaches or stomach issues

Behavioral Symptoms

  • Verbal outbursts (shouting, swearing)
  • Physical aggression (slamming, breaking things)
  • Passive-aggression (withholding communication)
  • Spreading rumors, blaming, or excluding others

What Causes Anger?

Anger can be caused by a range of psychological, biological, and situational factors, including:

  • Early life experiences such as abuse or trauma
  • Unmet emotional needs and unresolved grief
  • Current stressors like financial pressure, job loss, or relationship breakdown
  • Social expectations, especially around gender roles or masculinity
  • Mental health conditions such as PTSD, depression, or anxiety
  • Physiological causes like chronic pain, sleep deprivation, or hormonal imbalance

When Anger Turns to Aggression

Aggression is the behavioral expression of intense anger—whether physical, verbal, or passive. It can manifest in:

  • Fights, threats, or violence
  • Destruction of property
  • Intimidating or controlling behaviors
  • Cold withdrawal or silence used to punish others

Unchecked aggression can damage families, friendships, workplaces, and your own mental and physical health.

How Can Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) Help?

At CiEFT, we use Emotion-Focused Therapy to explore the emotional patterns underlying anger and aggression. Our therapists work compassionately to:

  • Process past wounds or traumas that fuel reactive patterns
  • Identify triggers and create strategies for de-escalation and emotional regulation
  • Build greater self-awareness and self-compassion
  • Transform your relationship with anger so it becomes a messenger, not a destroyer

We create a safe space where healing begins—not by suppressing anger, but by helping you understand its roots, and explore it in healthy, meaningful ways.
